Joshua 9: 13-15
"And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.
And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.
And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them."
How many times have we come across a decision in life where we find ourselves at a fork in the road where we must choose which direction to go? God wants us to walk with Him and seek His wise councel in every decision in life, both large and small.
In the passage above, the inhabitants of Gibeon knew that Isreal was led by the one true God and could not be defeated. Word had gone out among the people within the promised land, of which the nation of Isreal was to take over under the leadership of Joshua, and they heard of the mighty exploits of Isreal in battle because the Lord was fighting for them.
They were scared an devised a plan to make a pact with Isreal so that they would not be destroyed like the surrounding nations. They deceived Isreal into believing that they were from a faraway land so that they could live.
Isreal was deceived because they did NOT seek councel from the Lord. How many times have we been deceived or misled because we didn't seek His wise council? We have access to God through Jesus Christ and should lean heavily upon Him for every decision. We will hear His still small voice through the leading of the Holy Spirit and remain on the narrow road which leads to life.
