All of us have and will come face to face with failure to varying degrees. Learning how to effectively bounce back will enable us to grow and become more successful in future endeavors.
Life Is A Challenge
Life is comprised of a series of challenges and circumstances that push us beyond our comfort zone at times. We either overcome through success or we are temporarily set back in failure. I would make the argument that our long-term success is predicated upon how well we address both success and failure.
Life is not a "No-Fail Mission". Regardless of your preparation, experience, and expertise, the reality is that you will inevitably fail from time to time. You will come up short, and you will be forced to deal with the consequences of missing the mark.
If we push the envelope hard enough, we will experience failure to some degree. If we are not experiencing any type of setback, it may be because we playing it safe and not extending beyond our comfort zone or pre-established boundaries.
Avoid The Fear Of Failure
We must risk failure in order to grow and accomplish meaningful goals and objectives. Our mindset, however, should be one of ensuring that we are adequately prepared so that we perform to the best of our ability.
If failure happens or we come up short, we must learn from these experiences with the intent of coming back stronger and more prepared than we were before.
Adequate preparation is key if we want to win and succeed. There are no shortcuts to winning and being prepared is absolutely vital to being successful. We should do everything in our power to stack the deck in our favor through hard work, dedication, discipline, and sacrifice. However, we must also understand and then be willing to accept the consequences of failure in order to perform at our best.
Being afraid to fail places a heavy burden upon our shoulders and hampers our ability to perform to our true potential. So, how should we approach failure?
Recognize
When failure happens, do not focus or dwell on the negative consequences of your mistakes. Take a brief moment to adequately address them and then be ready to move forward with the corrected course of action.
Reflect
This is the time to hold yourself accountable. Be honest with yourself and ask the right 'Why', 'How', and 'What' questions.
Why did things not go my way?
How am I going to correct the current situation or outcome?
What caused this failure?
What must I do to move forward and ensure my success in the future? Depending upon the situation, this phase of the process may have to happen quickly.
Getting up and back into the fight is not enough if we do not first take the time to reflect and make the appropriate changes to ensure we don't get knocked down again.
Refocus
Avoid both internal and external distractions and stay focused on the process that will ensure your success. Ask yourself, "What part of the process do I have control over? What are the steps I must focus on in order to be successful?" Be process-focused over outcome focused!
Reengage
Commit with purpose, confidence, intention, and move forward with the corrected course of action.
